Scope of the Meeting | |
 |
 |
|
Cytokines 2008 will cover
the latest thinking on the role of cytokines in health
and disease. Animal as
well as human disease models will be addressed.
Some of the topics to be discussed
include:
-
Is cytokine storm good (or bad) for the host?
-
Which cytokine levels correlate best with morbidity
and mortality?
-
Which cytokine levels correlate best with survival?
-
Does the correlation depend on the pathogen?
-
Does it depend on the host's species and/or strain?
-
What agents are positive immunomodulators (raising
cytokine levels)?
-
Which are negative immunomodulators?

Meeting Structure, Duration
and Venues | |
 |
 |
Be it due
to a personal preference, or a hectic schedule - a conference
programme of three days is too short for many scientists, while one
of a week is just about right for some, but definitely too long
for others.
The
format of
this uniquely structured meeting in the field therefore aims to be flexible enough
to suit the needs, interests and available time of all
participants.
The
programme will be split into 2 distinct parts
as below:
(Please note that the structure of the
meeting is illustrated in full in
the
Meeting Format PDF file)
|
Part 1 –
Saturday, May 10th to Monday, May 12th, 2008
Venue
– Paradise Suites Hotel, Kololi, Atlantic Coast,
The Gambia
Three
days of oral and
poster presentations, with a lot of time
built into the programme for small group and one to one
discussions.
If two or three days is
all the time you can afford to be away from work at home, then
participation in Part 1 will provide you with everything you
need from a strong small meeting programme.
|
|
Part 2 –
Tuesday, May 13th to Thursday, May 15th, 2008
Venue
– Tendaba Camp
and Conference Facility,
The Gambia
A short
symposium/retreat
'up country' in Central Gambia -
talking science in
the West African countryside.
Designed to take advantage of the tranquillity and
natural beauty of the rural riverside location, which
provides the perfect setting and atmosphere for flexible
and relaxed discussions. Plenty of time will also
be available for participants to take in some of the
fantastic scenery, flora and fauna of the area, both on
foot and by boat.

The Scientific Programme of a Meeting with a Difference | |
 |
 |
|
From the point of inception -
starting with the choice of location, venue and dates -
the meeting will be organized somewhat differently than
many conferences you may have participated in during
your career. We start
not with a
list of invited speakers, but with a blank,
flexible programme, containing a number of as yet
unclaimed oral presentation slots that will be filled in
the coming months by dedicated researchers in the field
of cytokine and related research who sign up to participate and who
also demonstrate an interest in
presenting
work during the meeting.
This approach might seem to be
a little unorthodox - and perhaps it is - but it works!
It works extremely effectively in
creating an excellent atmosphere for constructive
scientific discussion and debate, and it serves to
provide the perfect breeding ground for the initiation
of a wide range of new relationships and collaborative
efforts.
If Mangosteen's approach has one
failing, it is only that more interested researchers
don't trust and believe that such a differently
organized meeting can be as effective, and of equal or
greater value, as a traditional conference. This only
serves to reduce the willingness of some excellent
individual scientists to commit their time towards
participating and making valuable contributions. This
is a failure not of the approach itself, but in the
communication of the approach - it's something that we
as a new initiative are currently working hard to
rectify - but yet it's a problem that quickly disappears
once word of mouth spreads and more prospective
participants begin to find and hold the belief that
Mangosteen's approach can work for them too. If you
intend to participate, please do spread the word amongst
your colleagues in the field, your assistance here is
invaluable.
If you are interested in
participating in Cytokines 2008, but have your doubts
about the manner of organization and ultimate strength
of the programme, please don't believe the words of the
organizer or waste any time reading further on -
instead, please simply
take a look at
the list of past participant testimonials from recent
meetings or contact one or more of the
past
participants from conferences in related scientific
fields in order to ask for their opinions on the
meeting that they attended - as well as on Mangosteen's
overall approach to communicating research between
colleagues in both the developed and developing worlds
and on their experience in West Africa in general.

Meeting Objectives | |
 |
 |
|
Other meeting organizers may offer a lengthy list of
specific objectives that they want to see their
conferences accomplish. Mangosteen’s objectives for
this meeting are broader, non-specific and intentionally
much more direct and uncomplicated:
To create a true forum for open interdisciplinary
discussion in the field of cytokine research.
To help encourage members of the research community,
from both the developed and developing worlds, to get
talking, thinking and ultimately collaborating.
The results and successes of this meeting are not in
the hands of the organizer, but are very much in the
minds and the future work and
projects of the participants.
Another of Mangosteen’s objectives is not to require
participants to spend more of their valuable research
resources on attending this meeting than they absolutely
need to: talk is cheap,
and this will be a cost-effective meeting.
